Choosing an attorney is one of the most critical decisions a person or organization can make. When you are under investigation or charged with a crime, your future is at stake. Understanding the prosecution’s case against you is important. But having someone on your side that can take that case apart is what you need. Mr. Kormann has both built cases as a State prosecutor and dismantled countless others in his many years as a criminal defense attorney. His experience on both sides of the aisle gives his clients a unique advantage.
Mr. Kormann most recently served in two administrations in the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General as the Deputy First Assistant Attorney General, the third-highest ranking law enforcement official in New Jersey. There, Mr. Kormann oversaw numerous offices within the Department of Law and Public Safety, including the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, the Office of Policing Strategy and Innovation, the Division of Violence Intervention and Victim Assistance, the Office of Law Enforcement Professional Standards, the Division of Law, the Youth Justice Commission, and the Office of Justice Data.
He counseled two Attorneys General on the State’s most sensitive and complex investigations, administrative and regulatory matters, workplace conduct, internal affairs, civil litigation, and criminal investigations and prosecutions. Mr. Kormann operationalized and implemented numerous Attorney General priorities.
In conjunction with the Division of Criminal Justice, he helped lead the State to a historic reduction in gun violence. While overseeing public corruption prosecutions, he ensured the successful detection and prosecution of those who abused the public trust or the electoral process. Mr. Kormann strategized with law enforcement leaders and the Office of Policing Strategy and Innovation create statewide policies that reflect best-practices for constitutional, modern policing. Mr. Kormann supervised outside counsel retained to conduct sensitive, high-profile internal affairs investigations. He promoted violence reduction through stakeholdering and supporting community and hospital-based violence intervention. Given the breadth of his portfolio and the need for transparency, Mr. Kormann also managed high-level media escalations and public messaging.
Before his elevation to Deputy First Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Kormann served as the Director of Investigations of Fatal Police Encounters, leading the only statewide homicide unit in New Jersey. There, he led a team of prosecutors and investigators responsible for the investigation and prosecution of the State’s most scrutinized homicides: police-involved shootings and deaths in custody. He oversaw nearly 50 such investigations and the presentation of those matters to the State grand jury. His leadership in this area also required the supervision of the 21 County Prosecutor’s Offices, meeting with effected families, faith leaders, and political stakeholders, and collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies.
Before joining the Attorney General’s office, Mr. Kormann was an accomplished and highly decorated trial attorney with the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender. There, he successfully represented thousands of clients charged with indictable crimes, including murder, aggravated sexual assault, death by auto, robbery, carjacking, financial crimes, official misconduct, weapons offenses, aggravated assault, and distribution of controlled dangerous substances. Mr. Kormann’s advocacy resulted in many acquittals, dismissals, and favorable plea offers. No stranger to the courtroom, Mr. Kormann successfully tried cases to verdict and was entrusted with defending against prosecutions that received nationwide attention. He later managed a Union County office of 23 trial attorneys and investigators, and routinely trained attorneys on effective cross-examination, opening statements, and summations.
Mr. Kormann began his career as an associate attorney for a large regional law firm and clerked for the Honorable Ronald D. Wigler, J.S.C., in the Essex County Superior Court.
