On March 12, 2012, NJBIZ, the state’s leading weekly business publication, ran a two-part feature on Dughi, Hewit & Domalewski, P.C. and Senior Partner Craig Domalewski. The articles provided a history of the firm, and discussed its practice areas and distinguished alumni.

This is the second year in a row that attorneys from the firm have been recognized by NJBIZ and included on this list. Last year, founding partners, John Dughi and Russell Hewit, were recognized and included on the list.

Chip Donnelly Wins Jury Trial in Medical Malpractice Case

Firm Partner Chip Donnelly recently won a significant jury trial in the New Jersey Superior Court on behalf of the firm’s client, who was a defendant in the case. In the case, plaintiff alleged that our client, a medical resident, failed to communicate important post-surgery information to the attending surgeon. All of the other defendants, including the attending surgeon, had settled with the plaintiff before trial. Mr. Donnelly presented a medical expert who testified that the resident had complied with the standard of care and properly kept the attending surgeon informed. The jury agreed and rendered a verdict of no cause for action in favor of the defendant.

Mr. Donnelly is one of the firm’s senior litigating attorneys, with over thirty years of experience in trial work and well over 100 jury trials in the medical and professional liability area.

Judge Wertheimer Joins Dughi, Hewit & Domalewski, P.C.

Dughi, Hewit & Domalewski, P.C. of Cranford is pleased to announce that recently retired Superior Court Judge William L’E. Wertheimer has joined the firm as Of Counsel. Judge Wertheimer retires as the most senior judge in the Superior Court, Union County, and the third most senior judge statewide, having served the judiciary for more than 27 years. In addition to his responsibilities as a trial court judge, he served as Presiding Judge of both the Civil and Criminal Divisions in Union County and on the Appellate Division.

While on the bench, Judge Wertheimer earned a reputation as an excellent judge with a deep knowledge of the law and a keen insight into resolving complex legal disputes fairly. He managed, settled and tried many of the most difficult cases pending in Union County, involving commercial, construction, toxic tort, products liability, insurance, professional liability and serious personal injury matters. Senior partner John Dughi commented, “Judge Wertheimer was a superb trial judge and, before that, an outstanding lawyer. He brings to the firm invaluable knowledge, judgment and wisdom. Our lawyers and, more importantly, our clients will benefit greatly from his insight and advice.”

Judge Wertheimer will head the firm’s Alternative Dispute Resolution / Mediation department and serve as Special Master in complex litigation cases pending in the state and federal courts. In addition, he will counsel and advise clients on trial preparation, settlement and trial strategies with matters pending in state and federal court and represent clients in select matters in federal court. Judge Wertheimer noted, “I am not retiring, but starting a new career with new opportunities. I worked with the lawyers at Dughi, Hewit & Domalewski before I was a judge, and had the pleasure of them trying many cases before me as a judge. I am excited about my new career with the firm.”

Judge Wertheimer graduated from Lafayette College and George Washington University School of Law. He was commissioned in the United States Army (Infantry) in 1964 and served on active duty from 1967 – 1969. He was Chief Trial Counsel to Courts and Boards at Fort Dix. Upon discharge from the US Army, he entered the private practice of law and was a partner in a major Newark firm specializing in complex civil disputes and litigation before his appointment to the court.

He is a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers, a life fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a member of the American Arbitration Association as well as a sustaining member of the Union County Bar Association and is listed in Who’s Who in American Law.

Governor’s Counsel Joins Dughi & Hewit, P.C.

Dughi & Hewit, P.C., a prominent New Jersey law firm with offices in Cranford, is pleased to announce that Craig A. Domalewski, who served as Senior Counsel to Governor Chris Christie for the past two years, has rejoined the firm as a principal member. The firm has also changed its name to Dughi, Hewit & Domalewski, P.C.

As Senior Counsel to Governor Christie, Domalewski provided advice and counsel to Governor Christie and Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa, who then served as Chief Counsel to the Governor, on a wide array of legislative, legal, regulatory, and policy initiatives.

Governor Christie, who practiced with Domalewski at Dughi & Hewit before the Governor served as United States Attorney for New Jersey, commented, “I would like to thank Craig for his outstanding service to New Jersey and to me.” The Governor described Craig “as a gifted lawyer who made significant contributions to my Administration.”

Prior to serving in the Christie Administration, Domalewski was a partner at Dughi & Hewit, P.C., where he represented pharmaceutical, manufacturing and private companies in complex civil litigation, including product liability, environmental and insurance coverage matters, and commercial transactions. He counseled hospitals and physicians in commercial disputes, regulatory and compliance issues and hospital / practice group transactions.

“We are excited to welcome Craig back to the firm,” said Russell L. Hewit, senior partner of the Cranford, New Jersey firm. “Craig is an exceptional lawyer who possesses a great deal of experience representing clients with complex legal problems in litigation and commercial transactions.” John Dughi added, “Craig’s experience in Trenton will be an asset for the firm and his return to the firm underscores our commitment to providing the highest quality legal service to our clients.”

Domalewski graduated summa cum laude from Seton Hall Law School in 1996 and received his B.A. from Lehigh University in 1991. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey and the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
